Dates, times and what a night looks like
The Delicata Classic Wine Festival runs across several evenings in August at Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta, with the gardens opening for the festival from 18:00 and pouring continuing late into the night. The 2026 edition opens on 14 August, and the middle evenings are usually the quietest if you want space at the harbour wall.
There is no ticket and no booking. You walk in, collect your festival glass, buy wine coins inside and work your way around the pouring stations at your own pace. Most people spend two to three hours there, often pairing it with dinner in Valletta before or after.
Entry, wine coins and prices
Entry to the Delicata Classic Wine Festival is free. You pay for what you drink using wine coins bought at the kiosks inside the gardens, and each coin is exchanged at the pouring stations for a glass. Coins are cash and card friendly at the main kiosk, but the queues there are longest between 20:00 and 22:00, so buy a batch early rather than one at a time.
A branded festival glass is handed out on arrival and is yours to keep. Hold on to it, because replacements cost extra, and unused wine coins can usually be returned or used across the run of the festival rather than expiring the same night.
What is poured
The pouring stations cover the full Delicata range, from everyday table wines to the Grand Vin de Hauteville and Medina labels. If you want to taste something you cannot easily buy abroad, look for the indigenous Maltese grapes: Girgentina for the whites and Gellewza for the reds and rosés, both grown on small parcels across Malta and Gozo.
Staff at each station pour and talk you through what is in the glass, so it is worth asking rather than pointing. Bottles are also sold on site at festival prices if you find something you want to take home.
Getting to Upper Barrakka Gardens
Upper Barrakka Gardens sits above the Grand Harbour at the top of Valletta, a short walk from the Valletta bus terminus through City Gate and along the bastions. The Barrakka Lift connects the gardens directly with the Valletta Waterfront, which is the easiest route if you arrive by ferry from Sliema or the Three Cities.
Driving in is the hard way. Valletta parking fills early on festival nights, so use the Floriana park and ride, a bus, or the harbour ferries. Late buses run from the terminus after the gardens close.
Food, music and atmosphere
Food stalls line the edge of the gardens with platters, cheeselets, ftira and other Maltese plates designed to be eaten standing up. Live bands play through the evening, and the terrace over the Grand Harbour is the spot everyone heads for once the sun drops.
It is busy, sociable and mostly standing, with limited seating on the low walls and benches. Arriving at opening time gives you the best chance of a table and a clear view of the harbour before the crowd builds.
