Teatru Manoel
The national theatre is the anchor of Malta's performing arts scene and one of the most beautiful small theatres in Europe. Built in 1731, the gilded horseshoe interior seats around 600 and has hosted continuous performance for nearly three centuries. The 2026 programme is one of its strongest in recent years.
Spring brought Amélie the Musical, followed by ŻfinMalta's UNFOLD and the Maltese-language Zewg Maltin fi Spanja. The opera programme has included Puccini's Triptych, Love Duets and Carmen as a dance production. Summer brings Classic Rock Night, Motown and Soul Night and The Swing Era, all part of the popular Iljieli fit-Teatru series which gives the space a different identity on summer evenings. Autumn returns with A Night at the Movies in September.
Tickets are remarkably affordable given the setting: most productions run €15 to €25. The building itself is worth visiting even if the specific programme is not your thing: book any performance and arrive early to take in the interior before the lights go down.
Pjazza Teatru Rjal
One step outside the Teatru Manoel, literally, is the open-air Pjazza Teatru Rjal: the roofless ruin of the Royal Opera House bombed in 1942, now reimagined as one of the more dramatically atmospheric performance spaces in the Mediterranean. The exposed walls, the open Valletta sky and the surrounding baroque streetscape give every performance a quality that no purpose-built venue can replicate.
The 2026 programme includes James Morrison live in concert on 4 July, the I Love 80s Show on 11 August, and the Ivan Grech Victory Street Launch Concert in May. The venue works best on a warm summer evening when the air is still and the acoustics sit somewhere between a theatre and the open sky.
MADC Open Air Theatre
The Malta Amateur Dramatics Club's open-air summer production is one of the more reliably enjoyable theatrical traditions on the island. The 2026 production is Hamlet, performed at the Msida Bastion Historic Garden in Floriana from 20 July. Shakespeare in a fortified garden overlooking the Grand Harbour, performed by a company that has been doing this for decades. Free or low-cost tickets. Take a jacket.
Spazju Kreattiv
The contemporary arts centre at St James Cavalier in Valletta is where Malta's more experimental theatre work lives. Productions here tend toward the unconventional: physical theatre, devised work, cross-disciplinary pieces that sit between performance and installation. The 2026 programme has included Gimgha l-Habs by Teatru Malta and Uncharted Territory, Tim Borg's stand-up in June. Worth checking the programme regularly if you have an interest in contemporary work beyond the classical repertoire.
Teatru Malta
The national theatre company produces in both Maltese and English across a range of venues, with Spazju Kreattiv as its primary home. Productions tend to be more politically and socially engaged than the Teatru Manoel programme, and the company has a reputation for ambitious staging. Gimgha l-Habs (The Trial) and the political satire Se Nilhaq Prim Ministru! were highlights of the spring 2026 season.
The Mediterranean Conference Centre
The MCC on Valletta's waterfront is Malta's largest indoor performance space and the venue for the biggest touring productions and concerts. The 2026 programme includes Grease the Musical in April, the Rocky Horror Show on 30 October at €125, the world premiere of Naples: Voice, Music and Soul featuring Balletto di Milano and La Scala Singers on 15 November at €49 to €85, and the Back to the Beats Dance Spectacular across two nights in July. The MCC lacks the character of the smaller venues but its scale allows for productions that cannot fit anywhere else on the island.
Teatru Astra and Teatru Aurora in Gozo
Gozo has its own serious theatre culture centred on two institutions: Teatru Astra in Victoria, which stages the island's main opera production each year, and Teatru Aurora, also in Victoria, which hosts visiting productions and concerts. The 2026 Astra production is Turandot, one of Puccini's most spectacular works. The Golden Age of ABBA and Boney M plays Teatru Aurora in November. Both venues are worth the ferry crossing if the programme appeals.
Candlelight Concerts
Sitting somewhere between concert and theatrical experience, the Candlelight series at the Phoenicia Malta runs throughout the year with programmes including Tribute to ABBA, Coldplay vs Imagine Dragons, The Best of Hans Zimmer and The Best of Vivaldi. A small ensemble performs by candlelight in the Phoenicia's ballroom, creating an atmosphere that sits closer to immersive theatre than a conventional concert. Tickets typically €35 to €47.
