Notte Bianca (3 October)
October opens with one of the great nights of the Maltese year. Notte Bianca turns Valletta into a single open-air cultural festival for one night, throwing open the doors of palaces, museums, churches and galleries until the early hours, filling the streets and squares with live music, performance and art installations. Entry to everything is free, and the event regularly draws over 60,000 people. If you are in Malta at the start of October, arrange your whole trip around being in Valletta that night. Defected Malta (1 to 4 October)
For house music fans, the month could not start better. Defected Malta brings the celebrated London label's weekender to the island across the first weekend of October, with events spread over UNO Malta, Café del Mar, Fort St Elmo and the Valletta Ditch. Daytime and nighttime sets, boat parties and a lineup that has previously included Hot Since 82, David Morales and Jayda G. Puerto Flamenco and Sooshi Mango (2 October)
Two very different nights on the same date. Puerto Flamenco returns to Teatru Salesjan for a third year, transforming the venue into an intimate tablao-style setting with authentic Spanish flamenco led by dancer Francesca Grima and a cast of young performers, with cabaret tables including food and wine. On the lighter side, the Australian-Italian comedy trio Sooshi Mango bring their Home Made World Tour to St Agatha's Auditorium in Rabat for a free night of comedy about migrant family life. BirguFest and Birgu by Candlelight (9 to 13 October)
One of the most atmospheric weekends of the Maltese year. The fortified city of Birgu has its narrow streets, alleys and stairways lit with thousands of traditional fjakkoli oil lamps, creating an unforgettable setting. Heritage Malta opens Fort St Angelo, the Malta Maritime Museum and the Inquisitor's Palace with extended hours and a combined ticket at just €3, alongside food stalls, concerts, historical re-enactments and the Malta Biennale pavilions. If you see one heritage event this autumn, make it this.
Rolex Middle Sea Race (17 October)
The single most spectacular free event of the month. The 47th Rolex Middle Sea Race starts at 11:00 on Saturday 17 October from Grand Harbour, sending an international fleet on a 606-nautical-mile course around Sicily, past the active volcanoes Stromboli and Etna, before returning to Malta. The start, beneath Valletta's UNESCO World Heritage fortifications, is one of the most photogenic moments in world sailing, and you can watch it for free from the Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens, the bastions and the waterfront. You do not need to know anything about sailing to be moved by the sight of the fleet setting off beneath the Saluting Battery.
Junior Eurovision Song Contest (24 October)
A genuine landmark for Malta. On 24 October the island hosts the Junior Eurovision Song Contest for the third time, at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre in Ta' Qali. The 10,268-seat venue is transformed into a Eurovision Festa Village inspired by Malta's patronal festival tradition, and the contest is broadcast to millions across Europe. Even if you are not in the arena, the buzz across the island in the days around the contest is worth experiencing. Browse the music calendar for everything happening that week.
Rocky Horror Show (30 October)
October closes on Halloween weekend with the Rocky Horror Show landing at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta. Audience participation is half the performance, so dress up, learn the callbacks and surrender to it. Standard theatre seating or VIP tables right in front of the stage. A cooking class or a quiet day
Not every October day needs to be built around a headline event. The Mediterranean Culinary Academy runs its rolling programme of cooking classes through the month, including the popular Taste of Malta handmade ravjul session on 15 October. October's mild, sunny weather is also ideal for the island's coastal walks, sea kayaking and the outdoor adventures listed in the outdoor calendar, often more comfortable now than in the summer heat.
Why October is a good time to visit
If you are still deciding when to come to Malta, October makes a strong case. The average daytime temperature sits in the mid-twenties, the sea holds its summer warmth well into the month, and the peak-season crowds and prices have both eased. Between Notte Bianca, BirguFest, the Rolex Middle Sea Race and Junior Eurovision, the cultural and sporting calendar is arguably richer than any summer month, and you get to experience it all at a more relaxed pace.
