A candlelight concert

Valletta Resounds at St John's Co-Cathedral is one of the most atmospheric events regularly running on the island. Inside the oratory that houses Caravaggio's masterpiece The Beheading of St John the Baptist, musicians perform baroque works alongside sacred Maltese music. The 40-minute concert is intimate, beautifully produced and set against one of the most extraordinary rooms in Europe. Tickets from EUR 25, with a VIP option that includes a guided tour before the concert.

The Candlelight Concert series at various venues takes a similar approach: a small ensemble, a stunning setting, and a programme built around recognisable works. Vivaldi's Four Seasons is a perennial favourite. These run across the year and are consistently one of the best-value date options on the island.

Guitar Classics at Corinthia Palace

Part of the Palace Concerts series, the Guitar Classics evening on 14 June 2026 features Maltese guitarist Karol Aquilina performing Albeniz, Piazzolla, Barrios and Paco de Lucia in the Corinthia Palace Secret Garden. A specially curated dinner menu accompanies the concert. This is the kind of evening that takes no planning beyond booking a table and showing up.

Jazz by the Grand Harbour

The Malta Jazz Festival in July is one of the more romantic settings for a night out anywhere on the island. Ta' Liesse waterfront, the Grand Harbour behind the stage, international jazz and a genuine festival atmosphere. Tickets are modest and the dress code is relaxed. Go early to get a good spot and stay for the full set. Read more in our complete summer music guide.

Opera in the Capital

Each summer, St George's Square becomes an open-air opera stage. The Opera in the Capital event brings Malta's top tenors and the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra together for a programme of arias, film music and musical theatre classics in one of the finest baroque squares in the Mediterranean. Tickets from EUR 20. An easy, elegant evening that needs no dress code beyond looking vaguely presentable.

Moonlight Swim at Infinity by Hugo's

Hugo's Infinity rooftop pool in St Julian's runs summer moonlight pool parties from June through September. The combination of a rooftop pool, the St Julian's skyline and a summer night makes for an unusually good evening. Check the full outdoor events calendar for dates and availability.

A village festa

This one only works if your date finds authentic local culture genuinely interesting. If they do, a village festa on a warm summer evening is one of the most memorable evenings you can have in Malta for essentially no cost. The fireworks alone are worth it. Check the festa calendar to find one near you: they run almost every weekend from May to September.

Sip and paint

Several venues across Malta run sip and paint evenings: a glass of wine, a guided canvas, somewhere nice to sit. These are not for everyone, but for a certain kind of couple they are exactly right: something to do together, a result to take home and a relaxed atmosphere that makes conversation easy. Browse workshops and classes for upcoming sessions.

Dinner and a show at the Teatru Manoel

The Teatru Manoel programme runs from autumn through summer and includes opera, drama, dance and chamber music, from Love Duets to Carmen. Dinner at one of the restaurants near the theatre in Valletta, then an evening at what is genuinely one of Europe's finest small theatres. The building alone is worth an evening.
