Malta Book Festival 2026

Things to Do in Malta in November 2026

November is Malta at its most relaxed. The summer crowds are long gone, the weather is mild and pleasant for walking and exploring, hotel rates are at their lowest, and the island settles into a quieter, more local rhythm. It is a wonderful time to experience Malta the way the Maltese do, and the events calendar keeps its own gentle pace: a major literary festival, a world premiere at the island's grandest venue, and the first stirrings of the Christmas season. Here is what to plan around.

Malta Book Festival (4 to 8 November)

The month opens with one of Malta's most beloved cultural events. The Malta Book Festival runs from 4 to 8 November at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre in Ta' Qali, organised by the National Book Council under the theme Uncover the Story. Now marking 45 years since its debut, the festival draws around 40,000 visitors and over 50 exhibitors, with book launches, talks, readings and a strongly family-oriented programme of activities.

The 2026 headline draw is an appearance by the bestselling crime writer Ian Rankin, creator of Inspector Rebus, with a masterclass on 5 November and An Evening with Ian Rankin on 7 November. Entry to the festival is free, making it one of the best value cultural days out of the year.

Naples: Voice, Music and Soul (15 November)

The cultural highlight of the month, and a genuine coup for Malta. On 15 November the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta hosts the world premiere of Naples: Voice, Music and Soul, a spectacular production bringing together the Balletto di Milano, the La Scala Singers and a live Italian Orchestra for an evening that fuses classical ballet, opera and orchestral performance. This is the kind of production that would sit comfortably in the great opera houses of Europe, and Malta is getting the very first performance. Tickets range from €49 to €85. For more on the island's theatre and performance scene, see our complete theatre guide.

The Golden Age of ABBA and Boney M (21 November)

Over in Gozo, the Golden Age of ABBA and Boney M comes to the historic Teatru Aurora in Victoria on 21 November. A high-energy tribute show celebrating two of the defining acts of the 1970s, it is a fun, feel-good night out and a good excuse to experience one of Gozo's grand old theatres. Tickets €30. If you are spending time on the smaller island, it is well worth building an evening around.

TS Rock Series: Brikkuni (28 November)

The Teatru Salesjan Rock Series closes its 2026 programme on 28 November with Brikkuni, one of Malta's most distinctive and theatrical alternative acts, supported by Cher Camilleri. An intimate live setting spotlighting the best of the island's home-grown alternative and rock scene. Tickets from €15. Browse the music calendar for more live music through the month.

The Christmas season begins (from 25 November)

By late November, Malta begins to turn its attention to Christmas, and the transformation is lovely. Christmas in the Capital launches in Valletta from 25 November, filling the streets and squares of the capital with festive lights, decorations, market stalls and seasonal events that run through December. The baroque city looks especially beautiful under Christmas lighting, and the early part of the season, before the December rush, is one of the nicest times to experience it. It is the perfect note on which to end a November visit and the ideal lead-in to the festive month ahead.

Why November is a good time to visit

If you are weighing when to come to Malta, November has a quiet appeal. The weather remains mild, generally comfortable for sightseeing and coastal walks without the summer heat. The major sights are free of crowds, hotel and flight prices drop significantly, and the island moves at an unhurried, local pace. With a major book festival, a world premiere and the start of the Christmas season, the cultural calendar remains genuinely rewarding, and you get to enjoy it all without the pressure of peak season. For travellers who prefer atmosphere and value over sunshine and beaches, it is one of the best-kept secrets in the Maltese year.
